This summer, York will be playing host to the Towards Carfree Cities Conference IX. Never afraid to wear our colours on our chest we're proud to be one of its sponsors. We get involved in such projects because we are strongly commited as a business to promoting alternative transport - walking, cycling and public transport. This is because the way that we choose to travel across the face of the earth has a decisive impact on the kind of urban environment we inhabit. We want to live in physically safe, attractive, socially cohesive, economically vibrant, people friendly, diverse and fundamentally liveable cities. All of these things correlate well with cycle friendly cities, but are fatally undermined by car dependence. It you are sceptical, compare Coventry say, with Copenhagen, better still, come to the conference and find out more. We feel that this is event is particularly timely in a city which while it markets itself as "cycle friendly" can't even manage a couple of continuous cycle lanes in its widest street (see Vote for Option Three below).
Does this mean that we are 'anti-car. Yes, but we love motorists - especially those that cycle! Besides, even we now have a van.
Coming to the UK for the first time, this year's conference is organised by World Carfree Network and local members of Carfree UK, with the support of ourselves, The Co-operative Membership, The Stockholm Environment Institute York, and others.
