Gazelle has a long and proud tradition of innovation in the world of cycling. Never content to rest on the laurels of countless industry and consumer awards, the designers at Dieren continuously strive to improve and rationalise all aspects of the mechanics, materials and the ergonomics of the bicycle. Often, the fruits of the designers' labours concern subtle tweaks here and there. Every now and then there is something more substantial - the headlight seamlessly integrated into the front mudguard, the chain tensioner hidden inside the chain guard, the stem allowing tool-free handlebar adjustment, even the simple rotary twist bell... These things make you sit up and take notice.
Once in a blue moon, however, something radical happens that challenges the neat ordering of our 2 wheeled world...
The Friiik is a radical bike that defies categorisation. It is the product of some pretty imaginative and unfettered thinking in the R&D department at Gazelle. How would you combine the benefits of a hub gear system with the benefits of a derailleur system? One way might be like this...
Design a chain case stiff enough to act as a chain stay. Design a chain derailling device that allows a chain to move up or down a cassette pedalling forwards or backwards and never allows the chain to come off the cassette or chain wheel. Isolate chain, cassette and derailling thing neatly inside the sealed chain case such that the rider never has to see or touch the dirty bits. Remove the other chain stay altogether, making rear wheel removal astonishingly straightforward. The Friiik is born.
Hats off to Gazelle for bringing a truly whacky bike to market. We are intrigued by this machine and can't wait to give it a try.

Axa frame locks
All Gazelles have a frame lock fitted at the rear of the bike, which immobilises the rear wheel at the flick of a lever. This means that an opportunist thief will have to carry your pride and joy away. If you use it in conjunction with a good D-lock, you have great security.
The lock always comes with 2 keys - if you lose them or damage them, all is not lost. We have outlined all you need to know here.
