Gazelle ebikes are not the cheapest, but are pretty much the highest quality and highest specification electric bikes available in the UK. Compare their details with those of their rivals carefully and you will soon realise why you get what you pay for.

With Gazelle you get the same renowned quality and high specification that you would receive on their standard bikes. Gazelle also put a lot of thought into their styling – to achieve the streamlined and integrated look of a classic Dutch bike, rather than the scruffy ‘bolt on’ appearance that leaves most of their rivals looking like over-decorated xmas trees!  This philosophy of total integration translates into a beautiful ride even with the power switched off. Not something most other ebikes can claim.

All Gazelle ebikes now use the front wheel drive ‘Innergy’ system. This consists of a motor integrated into the front wheel hub and a discreetly mounted battery pack that sits under the rear carrier. This system not only drives the bike, but also powers the lights – which can be controlled from the handlebars.  The battery control system cleverly retains sufficient power in a 'flat' battery to power the lights for a further 2 hours. The entire system is manufactured in Western Europe – so no cheapo Chinese stuff with unsubstantiated performance claims!

The first Gazelle ebike - the Easyglider, was built using the ubiquitous Panasonic gear drive system that many other brands use, but the popular demand for the Innergy soon outstripped it leading Gazelle to cease production of the Easyglider. Gazelle have now sold tens of thousand of Innergies throughout Europe, making it one of the most successful ebikes systems on the market.

Medeo Excellent Innergy with gold battery £2569.99

Its Excellent level specification is distinguished by a very high specification of components and accessories including leather handlebar grips and saddle bag; a sophisticated control system for the electrical assist (more on which below), including a backlit, graphic LCD control and display unit; a fantastically bright Fendervision front lamp integrated into the front mudguard. This is the Mercedes Benz or the Jaguar of the trekking ebike world.

How it works:
A dual sensor detects forward rotation of the pedals and also measures how much force you put into the pedals. The more force you apply to the pedals, such as when climbing a hill, the more power is delivered by the electric motor up to the mode limit.  Choose from ECO (maximum range), NORMAL or BOOST mode (maximum assist) to limit how much power is delivered. There is also a mode for less powerful riders which switches on power assistance at a lower pedal torque level.

The large screen LCD control and display unit displays everything from the mode selected, battery reserve, all the cycle computer information you can imagine and a wealth of other statistics.  It also allows you to set the desired mode at the touch of a button and control the powerful lights.  Power levels associated with each mode can be programmed to the desired level by your dealer to give you more or less assistance, depending on your needs and the terrain that you ride in etc.

Axa frame locks

All Gazelles have a frame lock fitted at the rear of the bike, which immobilises the rear wheel at the flick of a lever. This means that an opportunist thief will have to carry your pride and joy away. If you use it in conjunction with a good D-lock, you have great security.

The lock always comes with 2 keys - if you lose them or damage them, all is not lost. We have outlined all you need to know here.
