Gazelle ebikes are not the cheapest, but are pretty much the highest quality and highest specification electric bikes available in the UK. Compare their details with those of their rivals carefully and you will soon realise why you get what you pay for.

With Gazelle you get the same renowned quality and high specification that you would receive on their standard bikes. Gazelle also put a lot of thought into their styling – to achieve the streamlined and integrated look of a classic Dutch bike, rather than the scruffy ‘bolt on’ appearance that leaves most of their rivals looking like over-decorated xmas trees! This philosophy of total integration translates into a beautiful ride even with the power switched off. Not something most other ebikes can claim.

All Gazelle ebikes use the front wheel drive ‘Innergy’ system. This consists of a motor integrated into the front wheel hub and a discreetly mounted battery pack that sits under the rear carrier. This system not only drives the bike, but also powers the lights – which can be controlled from the handlebars. The battery control system cleverly retains sufficient power in a 'flat' battery to power the lights for a further 2 hours. The entire system is manufactured in Western Europe – so no cheapo Chinese stuff with unsubstantiated claims as to its performance!

Among the many technical and quality advantages of the Innergy system, one observation made by many testers and owners over other systems is how quiet it is. You could feasibly ride assisted in a group with others around you unaware of the helping hand you were receiving.

Gazelle have targetted sales of 60,000 Innergy cycles across the globe for 2011-12, making it one of the most successful ebike systems on the market.

The Fuente Pure Innergy is a light multi-geared trekking ebike with contemporary styling. Like its more curvy companion, the Medeo, it's basically a classic Dutch touring bike equipped with 24 speed derailleur gears. Unlike the Medeo, it has sporty frame geometry, a rigid fork, V-brakes rather than hub brakes and a multi-position handle bar.  Go for this if you want a capable bike for longer distance cycling or to handle hills - which it will easily cope with. The cost depends on the level of battery power that you choose:

Fuente Pure Innergy with bronze battery £1484.99.
Fuente Pure Innergy with silver battery £1559.99.
Fuente Pure Innergy with gold battery £1619.99.

Fuente Pure Innergy with platinum battery: £1799.99

Its Pure level specification is distinguished by having a rigid (rather than a suspension) fork; a less sophisticated control system for the electrical assist (more on which below); and a slightly more economical level of trim (by Dutch standards!) throughout the rest of the bike. Otherwise, it's a fully equipped, comfy, upright, very high quality town bike.

How it works
Pure models have a simple system using a rotation sensor to detect forward rotation of the pedals and switch on the motor.  The motor delivers a constant level of support, which the rider will feel right from the start of pedalling. This contrasts with the higher spec Xtra and Excellent models which deliver a more variable level of support. The overall level of assistance can be changed -  from Eco (maximum range) to Normal, or to Boost  (maximum assist), depending on the riding condtions. All three modes can be programmed by our technicians to deliver as much or as little of the power available as you desire, depending on your needs and the terrain that you ride in. On Pure models, the handlebar display is clear and simple, giving the rider information about the remaining battery power and which assistance mode is active.

Axa frame locks

All Gazelles have a frame lock fitted at the rear of the bike, which immobilises the rear wheel at the flick of a lever. This means that an opportunist thief will have to carry your pride and joy away. If you use it in conjunction with a good D-lock, you have great security.

The lock always comes with 2 keys - if you lose them or damage them, all is not lost. We have outlined all you need to know here.
