Gazelle ebikes are not the cheapest, but are pretty much the highest quality and highest specification electric bikes available in the UK. Compare their details with those of their rivals carefully and you will soon realise why you get what you pay for.
With Gazelle you get the same renowned quality and high specification that you would receive on their standard bikes. Gazelle also put a lot of thought into their styling – to achieve the streamlined and integrated look of a classic Dutch bike, rather than the scruffy ‘bolt on’ appearance that leaves most of their rivals looking like over-decorated xmas trees! This philosophy of total integration translates into a beautiful ride even with the power switched off. Not something most other ebikes can claim.
All Gazelle ebikes now use the front wheel drive ‘Innergy’ system. This consists of a motor integrated into the front wheel hub and a discreetly mounted battery pack that sits under the rear carrier. This system not only drives the bike, but also powers the lights – which can be controlled from the handlebars. The battery control system cleverly retains sufficient power in a 'flat' battery to power the lights for a further 2 hours. The entire system is manufactured in Western Europe – so no cheapo Chinese stuff with unsubstantiated performance claims!
Among the many technical and quality advantages of the Innergy system, one observation made by many testers and owners over other systems is how quiet it is. You could feasibly ride assisted in a group with others around you unaware of the helping hand you were receiving.
The first Gazelle ebike - the Easyglider, was built using the ubiquitous Panasonic gear drive system that many other brands use, but the popular demand for the Innergy soon outstripped it leading Gazelle to cease production of the Easyglider.
Gazelle have targetted sales of 60,000 Innergy cycles across the globe for 2011-12, making it one of the most successful ebike systems on the market.
The Chamonix Xtra Innergy is a cultured pedal-assisted city bike, with eight speed hub gears and suspension forks. This city bike has a wide range of hub gears to cope with hilly terrain and a sophisticated power assist system that responds to your needs. The lighting is fully integrated and of a high specification. The price depends on the level of battery power that you choose:
Chamonix Xtra Innergy Bronze: £2014.99
Chamonix Xtra Innergy Silver: £2089.99
Chamonix Xtra Innergy Gold: £2149.99
Chamonix Xtra Innergy Platinum: £2329.99
The Xtra level specification is distinguished by having 8 hub gears rather than 7; a supension (rather than a rigid) fork; a more sophisticated control system for the electrical assist (more on which below), including a backlit, graphic LCD control and display unit; a high spec integrated front lamp; and a more luxurious level of trim throughout the bike. As you'd expect, it's a fully equipped, super-comfy, upright, very high quality town bike.
How it works:
A dual sensor detects forward rotation of the pedals and also measures how much force you put into the pedals. The more force you apply to the pedals, such as when climbing a hill, the more power is delivered by the electric motor up to the mode limit. Choose from ECO (maximum range), NORMAL or BOOST mode (maximum assist) to limit how much power is delivered. There is also a mode for less powerful riders which switches on power assistance at a lower pedal torque level.
The LCD control and display unit is handlebar mounted and shows the mode selected, battery reserve, speed, number of kilometres travelled and allows you to set the desired mode at the touch of a button. When it gets dark, you can turn the powerful lights on from the display, which is also backlit. Power levels associated with each mode can be programmed to the desired level by your dealer to give you more or less assistance, depending on your needs and the terrain that you ride in etc.

Axa frame locks
All Gazelles have a frame lock fitted at the rear of the bike, which immobilises the rear wheel at the flick of a lever. This means that an opportunist thief will have to carry your pride and joy away. If you use it in conjunction with a good D-lock, you have great security.
The lock always comes with 2 keys - if you lose them or damage them, all is not lost. We have outlined all you need to know here.
